It was a packed house on Friday for the 2018-2019 GWLWHL final championship game between Team Blue and Team Orange!
Talk about edge-of-your-seat excitement!!! It was a thrilling game from beginning to end, even though there were no goals scored until the third period. Both teams matched up well which made for a fun game to watch. Team Blue scored first near the beginning of the third period, then scored another six minutes later. Up 2-0, it seemed like a sure thing for Blue until Team Orange managed to score soon after Blue's second goal. With Orange fighting even harder for another goal, leave it to them to score and tie up the game in dramatic fashion with only 21 seconds left! It was now 2-2 and as the clock ran out, it was time for a shootout. Blue's first attempt was a goal as well as Orange's first. Blue missed on the second attempt but Orange scored, leaving Blue having to score on their third attempt in order to keep going. Unfortunately after playing an amazing game, Blue missed on their third attempt and Team Orange became the 2018-2019 GWLWHL champions! Congratulations Team Orange!!!!!!
Mel and I hope everyone enjoyed the season and the windup! It was a lot of fun and we wish you all a great summer.
See you in October!!!
In case you missed it, some intense GWLWHL semi-final action was happening at the WWC this past Friday night between Team Blue and Team Purple and it all started off with no one knowing which team was "home" or "away"! Once that mess was sorted and benches were switched, the game got underway.
It was the Blue team that scored first near the end of the first period and netted another early in the second. Purple responded midway in the second period with one goal, but Blue answered back only a minute after that. Team Purple was able to score one last goal before the second period was done and heading into the third, it was a 4-2 lead for Blue. Although the Purple team may have had after-game beers on the mind by the third period, it didn't stop them from putting every effort into the game, even though they were only 9 players strong.
After a hard fought game by both teams, Team Blue was victorious with a 4-2 win and will now face off with Team Orange in the final championship game on Friday, March 15th!!! Way to go, Team Blue!!
Team Blue and Team Orange have met 3 times during the regular season and once during the playoffs. With the outcome favouring Team Orange for all but one game (which resulted in a tie), you can be sure both teams will be extremely energetic on the ice right from puck drop until the whistle blows at the end of the game. Don't miss the action!! Good luck to both teams!!!
Once the 2018-2019 GWLWHL winner is crowned, please join the league upstairs in the Riverview Room for food, drinks, prizes, and DANCING! It's the perfect time to meet the players you have seen on the ice and played with all season and you can finally learn what they look like beyond the helmet!
Better late than never! Your weekly playoff report is here and although there were only two games on Friday, that doesn't mean there were only two games worth of excitement!!!!
First off, Team Yellow took on Team Purple in a nail-biter of a game. Both teams ended up lower than they wanted to be in the regular season standings and now faced each other in an important elimination game. Who would move on to the semi-finals??? It was anyone's guess as the puck dropped and the game got underway. Purple scored their first goal just over a minute into the game and scored two more in the second period, lifting them ahead 3-0. Yellow made many good passing plays, however they weren't able to get the puck past Purple goaltender, Melanie. With a final score of 3-0, Purple will advance to the semi-finals but would have to wait for the second game of the night to end to find out their opponent.
Team Orange versus Team Blue was up next and even with both teams having the previous week off, neither team looked rusty as they came off the bench to start the game. Orange got the game's first goal, taking a note from Team Purple by scoring early. They followed this goal with another two minutes later. Just over halfway through the first period, the Blue team got their first goal and after that, both teams turned the intensity up. With many fans cheering from the bench, Team Orange used that momentum to score four more goals in the second period alone. Despite the many shot attempts by Team Blue, they only scored two more goals, ending the game with a score of 6-3...a win for Team Orange. They advance to the final game with this win!
Coming up on Friday, March 8th at 7:45pm - it's the moment you've been waiting for... or maybe you're just waiting for the final championship game... in any case, the upcoming game will be a defining moment in the 2018-2019 GWLWHL season: who will take on Team Orange to win it all?!? It's a Blue versus Purple extravaganza and we want YOU to come to the rink to cheer the teams on! During the course of the regular season, Purple and Blue matched up three times, with Blue winning two out of the three games. This is sure to be a marvelous and zesty game so don't miss the action!!!!!!
WOW - what a night to be alive! And what a night in the GWLWHL for week 3 of the playoffs! Elimination was a possibility for all teams facing off this week, but only the most hungry would move on...
After losing to Team Red during week 1 of the playoffs, Yellow enjoyed the extra week off to rest and prepare for the competition - which turned out to be Team Green, who beat Purple 4-2 during week 1. The last time these two teams met during the regular season, Green beat Yellow with a score of 7-1, leaving Yellow wanting to flip that score around in their favour for game 1 of the night. What followed was an intense and exciting game with Green getting on the scoreboard first just over a minute into the first period. Yellow soon evened the score with an unbelievable pass of the puck from Brenda Duncan, while on her knees! Only in the playoffs, people! After one, it was now 2-1 for Yellow. Both teams added one goal each in the second period and then in the third, it was Yellow leading with a score of 4-3 when Green squeaked the puck into the net with just 15 seconds left! Cue the shootout (the second one so far in the playoffs)! After three shooters each, it was Ashley Verot who won it for Yellow, advancing her team to face Team Purple next Friday.
Speaking of Team Purple, they were up next against Team Red for game 2 of the night. During the regular season, Team Red won all but one of the matchups against Purple, leaving Purple ready to get the win this time - and with only 7 seconds into the game, they opened up the scoring. With another goal under their belts not long after that, Red responded by scoring one just before the halfway mark of the first period. It seemed as though bodies were flying everywhere during most of the game as both teams kept fighting to advance to week 4, and heading into the third period, Purple was up 5-2 but Red wouldn't give up that easily. Even with Red's Kari Tkach scoring a screened shot with four minutes left, it was Purple who pulled off the win, getting one last buzzer-beating goal with 0:01 seconds left to make the score 7-3. With Red and Green now out of the playoffs and Orange and Blue both advancing early after week 2, fourth place Purple will take on sixth place Yellow for week 4 with the winner going on to the semi-finals. Following the Yellow and Purple game, top Team Orange will face their Blue rivals for a highly anticipated game that's sure to deliver some stellar goals from the players.
Let's increase the fan attendance for week 4!!! Team Yellow and Team Purple will need YOUR support as they both face elimination. Following that, the long awaited match-up between Team Orange and Team Blue is sure to be a crowd pleaser! Come out and support your favourite team! What else are you going to do on a cold, dark, Winnipeg winter night?!?!?!?
The first game of the night was Team Orange versus Team Green. This was a very fast paced game right from beginning to end. Team Orange squeezed a couple goals in the first period, leading 2-0. With no scoring until four and a half minutes left in the second, Team Green scored and then Team Orange followed up with another goal to end the second period 3-1. Although the third period had lots of shots on both goalies, again there was no scoring until under 5 minutes left. Three more goals scored by Team Orange to end the game 6-1.
Game two proved to be a nail biter right from the beginning to the end. Team Red scored the first goal early in the 1st period and held this lead until 8:50 in the second. Team Blue scored two goals 4 minutes apart in the second and held the score to 2-1 until the last minute of the period. With 14 seconds left in the second period, Team Red tied it up. With no scoring in the 3rd period, this game went into a shootout. Goals were scored on both sides with the first shooters and Team Blue's second shooter - Becky scores on her attempt. The goalies stopped all other shoots and Team Blue wins the game.
Stay tuned for next week where
Team Yellow plays Team Green at 6:30
Team Purple plays Team Red at 7:45
Wind up this year will follow the last game on March 15. If you are not playing, make sure you try to come out and cheer on your second favorite color. Then once we have crowned our 2019 champions, please join us in the Riverview Room at the Winter club for food, drinks and dancing. An invitation will be coming in the next week to get attendance numbers.
Why did the GWLWHL hockey player cross the rink? To get to the other side, of course! But all jokes aside, the GWLWHL playoffs have begun and with another extreme cold weather warning happening outdoors, thousands upon thousands of fans crowded the stands inside the rink to warm up and cheer their favourite team on... well, a few fans anyways (and a new furry friend)!
First up was fourth place Team Purple versus fifth place Team Green. These two teams are no strangers as they matched up the week before, ending in a win for Purple. Naturally, this meant that Team Green would want revenge, especially now that playoff hockey has begun and we're all a little more crazy. Purple got the first goal of the game late in the first period after many shot attempts from both teams. While things were looking fairly good for Purple, Team Green really let loose in the second period with three goals from three different star players. The first goal came courtesy of a loose puck around the net which was easy pickings for Captain Stacey. Not long after, Sniper 3.0 - Ginette Lafreniere, scored a stupendous goal, igniting her team's bench. Following that, Rhonda Sandberg stunned Team Purple by ripping the puck past the goalie to keep her team ahead. After an exciting game, Green claimed the win 4-2 and will face juicy Team Orange on Friday, February 15th.
The second and final game of the night was between Team Red and Team Yellow. These two teams have faced off several times over the regular season with Red winning all matches. Team Yellow was hoping to make Red forget they ever won any of those games and were pumped up to get the game started. Coming off a tie last week, Team Red was set to win this time and spent much of the first period in Yellow's end. Almost halfway into the first, Amy Bertrand scored the game's first goal for Red, causing screams of joy to ring out from the bench. After scoring two more goals in the second period, both teams were silent in the third and the game ended with a 3-0 win for Red. Phenomenal Yellow goaltender, Nat, faced an amazing 37 shots while astonishing Red goaltender, Nancy, got her first shut out of the playoffs. Red will now face Blue for what will surely be a fun game on Friday, February 15th.
Team Yellow and Team Purple won't play next until February 22nd and will find out their opponents on the 15th.
Be sure to come out to the Winter Club every Friday to cheer on the teams as they advance through the playoffs. Bring hot popcorn, noise makers (cowbells?!), funny signs, and warm drinks, all the while screaming continuously at the top of your lungs in support of all the teams!
Week 16 and the final regular season games are here!
With points up for grabs, Team Red was looking to squeeze Team Orange in the first game of the night. A very exciting game ensued, with Orange getting the elusive first goal. But this didn't hinder the Red team who came back to score two more in the second period, leading the game 2-1 after two. Team Orange, still wanting to get a full two points and not letting up, scored two in the third, putting the Red team down by one. Red was determined to tie up the game, and they did just that when Anna McKinnon netted one with only 12 seconds left. Red's fate was not quite sealed as they had to wait on the results of game two to see where they would stand for the playoffs.
Team Blue versus Team Yellow was up next and it was anyone's guess as to who would be victorious. Blue was on a mission to claim second place overall but it was the Yellow team who scored first in the game. Blue came out hard in the second period, scoring their first only a minute in, then another near the end of the period, getting up 2-1. The Yellow team tried to tie it up but it was too late as Blue won the match and advanced to second place overall.
The final game was between Team Green and Team Purple with both teams fighting for fourth and fifth place. Purple got on the board first, but it was only 50 seconds later that Green tied it up. The second period was a different story as Purple scored twice to be up 3-1. The highlight of the evening came late in the third period when Purple's Lori "The Wall" Frain let down her wall and scored her first goal of the season in spectacular fashion.
Now that the regular season is officially complete, the standings are as follows:
The first playoff game will be on Friday, February 8th at 6:30pm between Purple and Green, followed by a second game at 7:45pm between Red and Yellow. Team Orange and Team Blue won't play until February 15th and won't know their opponent until the games on the 8th are played. Good luck to all teams!
On a very chilly Friday night in Winnipeg (which was possibly colder than Antarctica?!), week 15 in the GWLWHL was set to go - and it started off with a bang!
Team Orange battled Team Green in the first game of the evening and the Green Machines were looking to get their first win against their juicy nemesis. Not wasting any time getting on the board, it was Green's Marilee Boileau who skated across the ice with the puck early in the game, through the Orange defense, and shot the puck into the back of the net. But the victory was short lived as not long after, Team Orange scored to tie up the game after one. The second period saw three goals - all from an energetic Green team, including two from Captain Stacey. Now behind by three goals, the Orange team knew they had to keep pushing hard to stay in the game. After two penalty calls against them for "too many men on the ice" and "misconduct", they shook it off and scored two late in the third. But it was Green's night as they got the win 4-3 and are holding down fourth place in the standings.
Team Purple versus Team Yellow was next on the menu and it was quite the interesting game. Team Yellow opened up the scoring, getting two goals early on in the first period. Purple responded with one late in the first, putting them behind by only one goal. The second period of the game saw two Yellow goals be called back due to some confusion on the ice. With the Yellow team reeling from the calls, Team Purple took advantage and scored two, putting them up 3-2. After gathering themselves on the bench between periods, the Yellow team were hoping to at least tie the game... and their wish came true. Yellow's Ashley Verot scored the game-tying goal, giving each team one point - not enough to budge either team's place in the regular season standings.
Team Blue played against Team Red to end the frozen evening. Before the game, Team Red was overheard chanting, "when the captains are away, the Red team will play!"... and that they did! Blue got on the scoreboard first, but not long after, Red tied it up. Both teams tried hard to score more fancy goals but it was either the great defense or the stellar goaltending that kept the score so low. Team Red scored near the end of the second period and did what they could to stop Blue from tying things up. With no goals in the third period, the Red team managed a win, passing Blue for second place in the standings.
Join us on Friday for the last regular season GWLWHL game. It's sure to be a dandy!
"Every day is a great day for hockey" - Mario Lemieux. Nice one, Mario. But what you don't know is that the GWLWHL only plays on Fridays...and on Fridays, the place to be is the Winnipeg Winter Club.
The night began with Team Blue against Team Purple. At puck drop, the sassiness ensued and some good-natured jabs were thrown between the teams throughout the game. Blue opened up the scoring near the end of the first period when Trudy Mulder let one rip past the goaltender that went bar down and in. Scoring another three goals, it was now 4-0 for Blue after two. Purple was trying to turn up the heat and score, when Joanna Boult shot the puck hard past the goaltender and almost through the netting to get Purple on the board. But the Blue team managed to shut down Purple for the rest of the game, ending in a 4-1 Blue win.
The second game was between Team Red and Team Orange. What some may describe as an almost mirror-image of Game 1, the Orange team opened the scoring halfway through the first period and after two, it was 4-0 for Orange. With many chances to score, the Red team fought hard to get past Orange players who always seemed to be in the way. Red's Xin Wang put her team on the board late in the third period but it wasn't enough to beat Team Orange. No strangers to the scoresheet, Orange players Hayleigh Gushuliak, Rei Watanabe, Alana Mendes, and Captain Misty all scored for their team. Orange is now in top spot in the regular season standings, ahead of Team Blue by 5 points.
Roll the highlight reel for the final game of the night between Team Yellow and Team Green! It was a lemony first period after Yellow scored early on, but the "limes" weren't soured at all. After a quick break between periods to strategize, Green was determined to get fizzy like a bottle of lemon-lime 7up, which is just what they did. Chrisanne Beisick tied it up when she scored early in the second period, which opened up the scoring for Green as they got another two goals before the period was over. Not satisfied with just one goal though, Chrisanne (now known permanently as Sniper 2.0) scored another beauty 30 seconds into the third. Enter Sniper 3.0, Ginette Lafreniere, who scored two spectacular goals only three minutes apart. Somebody find a fire hydrant and put this girl out - she is RED HOT! Winning 7-1, Team Green has now passed Purple for fourth place in the standings.
It was primary versus secondary (and tertiary!) colours for week 13 of the GWLWHL!
We all know that blue + yellow = green, but did you know that blue + green = teal? For game 1 of the night, it was a vibrant mix of aqua on the ice as a full team Blue faced off against a 9-player Green team. It didn't take long for Blue to strike first, scoring in the first period to be up 1-0 after one. The second period was a hard battle between the teams with chances for both to score but it wasn't until early in the third period when the puck crossed the goal line - this time in team Green's favour. However, the celebration was short-lived when Becky Chervinski scored her second of the night to help her team win 2-1.
Magenta was the colour of choice for game 2 - Red versus Purple. Fun fact: Magenta is not found in the visible spectrum of light (thanks, Wikipedia), but everyone saw when Anna McKinnon scored late in the first period for Team Red. Throughout the rest of the game, the Purple team tried to even the score but goaltender Nancy and the Red defense wouldn't let the puck go in the net. The game ended with Red winning 1-0 and Purple still solid at fourth place in the standings.
Game 3 was a citrus battle between Yellow and Orange, a combination forming an amber-type of colour. According to many sources, amber is a colour symbolizing energy and is also used in traffic lights and turn signals. The Orange team seemed to channel this amber energy to turn their traffic light from amber to GREEN as they stepped on the gas and went full speed into the first period of the game, scoring two goals quickly - one of which was scored by superstar Rei Watanabe who's been quietly adding up the points this season. Team Yellow also got on the board in the first, but Orange never let up, scoring another four goals total in the second and third periods, winning the game 6-1.
Now only three games left in the regular season, things are quickly heating up between the teams before playoffs begin. Next week starts off with Team Blue and Team Purple, followed by Team Red against Team Orange, and ending with Team Yellow versus Team Green.
It was a night to remember in the GWLWHL for the first games of 2019!
The evening began with Team Orange against Team Purple and the glass of "O.J." was filled to the brim as every Orange player was in attendance. Team Purple was missing a few players but was still hoping to get in Orange's faces and "DE-STROY". Unfortunately for Team Purple, Orange wasn't phased by any of Purple's attempts to get in their heads and they blasted their pulp to a 5-0 lead after two periods. Purple got on the scoreboard in the third period when Larissa Schmitke put the puck in the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Team Orange's Rei Watanabe scored halfway through the third to make it 6-1 for an Orange win, which could have easily been 10-1 if it weren't for Purple's Lori "The Wall" Frain stopping many of Orange's attempts to get in the zone.
Coming off a big win last week, Team Yellow was looking to grab another two points against Team Green and was hoping to move up in the standings before the end of the regular season. With lots of chances for both teams, it was 1-1 after two periods and going into the third, it was anyone's game! Halfway through the third period, Green's Captain Stacey scored with a sweet assist from Ginette Lafreniere, putting Green up 2-1. Less than a minute later, Yellow's Jenna Weins tied it up. The last four minutes of the game was a nail biter but ended in a 2-2 tie with Yellow now one point behind Green in the standings.
The final game of the night was between Team Red and Team Blue. A fast-paced game, both teams had many chances to score but goaltenders Nat and Nancy were so focused that they let nothing get through them and into the net, ending the game in a 0-0 tie. Although there was no scoring to report for this game, two penalties were given out in the third period. Team Blue was penalized for tripping and near the end of the game, Team Red was penalized for hooking. Now only one point behind Team Red in the regular season standings, the Blue team will face Red once again on January 25th.
Week 13 will be an important week as all teams continue to fight for more points to claim their spot in the standings before playoffs. It's a close race for fourth, fifth, and sixth spot as Purple, Green, and Yellow are each separated by only one point and second and third place (Red and Blue) are also separated by only one point. Orange is leading with 4 points ahead of second place. Tune in on Friday to see what happens!
Well, the Grinch has won - the Christmas game was cancelled! Both Team Red and Team Green did not have enough players available and with limited spares, the game was declared a 0-0 tie. While they don't meet up again during the regular season, perhaps Red and Green will have one more battle against one another once playoffs begin...
Playoffs? Don't talk about - playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs?!? Yes - playoffs will be starting sooner than you might think! As this past week saw mostly empty benches for the teams, the first game of 2019 will likely be a different story, once everyone is back from holidays and ready to skate off all those winter treats.
The first game of the night was between Team Orange and Team Blue. Blue was hoping to pass the Red team in the standings for second place and while they didn't get a full two points, the game ended in a 3-3 tie for one point each. Team Blue opened up the scoring but Orange didn't waste any time responding, scoring their first just a few seconds later. Going into the third period and up by two goals, Orange was sure they would pull off the win. The Blue team rallied, scoring two goals later in the third to tie up the game and claim a point. Now sitting one point behind the Red team, Team Blue will face Red next Friday in what some may say will be an epic duel for second place in the league.
The last game saw Team Purple face off against Team Yellow. Team Purple was off to a great start when less than a minute in, Captain Sheryl channeled her "inner Adam Lowry" to score the first goal. The Yellow team did not let that goal get to them and they responded in a big way by scoring four goals in the first period alone. After scoring two more in the second period, it was now 6-1 for Team Yellow. Looking for Yellow's lucky goal number 7, Captain Megan found it, scoring midway through the third period and securing herself a hat trick for the night. Fun fact: Purple will look to get even when they play Team Yellow once more on January 25th, just before the end of the regular season.
Week 12 - the first game of the new year - will see Team Orange versus Team Purple, Team Green against Team Yellow, and Team Red battle Team Blue. As always, be sure to come and cheer on your favourite teams in the stands!
The scheduled game at 6:30pm on Friday, December 28th between Team Red and Team Green has been cancelled due to excessive holiday celebrations and limited players. However, the ice time will be available to any players wanting to get in some free skating time.
The other two games are still scheduled to take place at 7:45pm and 9:00pm.
Fact: 10 weeks of hockey has gone by already. Whaaaaaaaaat????? Yes... yes, they have... and on Friday night, all teams were in a state of disbelief about how quickly the season has gone by.
It was a battle between Team Green and Team Orange to start the evening. Team Orange had an extra boost of "Vitamin C" on their bench while the Green team experienced a sudden loss of players and needed to quickly call in an extra reinforcement to start the game. Team Green did their best to fend off multiple attacks of Orange pulp but the score was already 2-0 after the first period and after a quiet second period, Captain Misty - no stranger to the score sheet - scored two goals in the third for a juicy 4-0 win for Orange.
As Green and Orange went off the ice to enjoy their team potlucks in the dressing rooms, it was time for a Team Blue and Team Purple match-up. The first period was a back-and-forth battle of goals for each team. Blue was the first to get on the scoreboard with Purple answering back a few minutes later. Then Blue scored another and Purple scored once more, tying the game at 2-2 after one. After scoring another goal late in the second period, Purple went on the defense to keep their lead and with help from their goaltender, Nat, they won 3-2 and are now a solid fourth place in the standings.
With full stomachs from all the delicious holiday potluck food at the rink, it was time for Team Red to play Team Yellow in the night's final game. The Red team got their first goal of the night halfway through the first period then after realizing they could pass Team Blue in the standings with a win, they turned it up in the second, scoring three goals within three minutes for a final score of 4-1. Now only three points behind the league's top team Orange, Red will look to claim their place as number one when the GWLWHL resumes after the holiday break.
In the spirit of the season, please enjoy "The 12 Days of Hockey - an 80's Classic" video and song introduced by a young and vibrant Ron MacLean:
Week 9 was a rough one for most of the teams in the GWLWHL as the holiday season began and claimed many players to parties rather than to the ice.
Team Yellow faced Team Blue in the first game of the night with both teams needing to call up spare players to the benches. In what some may say was a game mostly ruled by Team Blue, the game resulted in a 0-0 tie, with the Yellow team's goalie making some spectacular saves to help keep them in it to win it. Currently, the Blue team remains in the league's second spot with 12 points while Team Yellow looks to move up to fifth place next week.
In a rematch of the season's first Christmas game which ended in a tie, the Green team planned to keep Team Red "snowed in" on the bench but that didn't happen. Someone roll the highlight reel for Team Red's Naomi Litman and Joy Levesque, as Naomi would set them up and Joy would put them into the back of the net, sending the crowd into a frenzy as they watched the dynamic duo's dazzling display. Team Green fought back late in the third when Ginette Lafreniere scored off a sweet rebounded shot, but time ran out before the Green team could make a comeback, ending in a 2-1 game win for Red.
Game 3 was between Team Purple and Team Orange. Orange has prevailed over Purple all season and this week was no exception. Up three goals by the end of the first period alone, Team Orange continued to pass the puck like seasoned veterans, scoring three more goals for a 6-0 win. Although it may have been a loss for the Purple team on the ice, they plan to "win" with their food at next week's holiday potluck at the rink!
December 14th is the last week of games before the Christmas break. Come and cheer on your pals from the stands and watch as Team Green will face Team Orange, Team Blue takes on Team Purple, and Team Red plays Team Yellow.
As we descend upon December with only a few games remaining before the New Year, the Friday night match-ups for Week 8 were tough ones with the league's teams all trying to get to the top of the regular season standings.
Game 1 featured Team Green against Team Blue. In what was a nail biter of a game, Team Blue was the dominant force, scoring their first goal just over a minute into the game. Energized from snagging the lead so early, they continued to shut down almost all of Team Green's chances to score, holding Green to just 8 shots on goal over all three periods. With an impressive 33 shots on goal, it was clear that Blue was fighting hard to jump up to first spot in the overall league standings. With a 3-1 win, they sit second in the league behind the Orange team by just one point.
Game 2 saw Team Red take on Team Purple. Although no goals were scored in the first period, it was the Red team who shut down most of Team Purple's chances to skate out of their zone with the puck. After two periods, the score was 1-0 for Red, and with Sherry Shindruk scoring her first goal of the season for Team Purple early in the third, it was now a tie game. Team Purple thought they would ask the Red team if they'd be okay with ending the game in a tie, but they declined and decided to go for the full two points by scoring three more goals, ending the game with a 4-1 win and claiming third place in the standings.
Game 3 of the night was between Team Orange and Team Yellow. As we all know, there is no love lost between these citrus rivals and Team Orange made sure Yellow knew it, with Captain Misty scoring two goals in the first period to put them up 2-0. The Yellow team came out of the gates quick to start the second period to try to put a sour lemon taste in the mouths of Team Orange but before they knew it, it was now 4-1 in Orange's favour heading into the third. Even with two goals scored by Yellow's Ashley Verot in the third period (getting her a hat trick in the game), it was Rei Watanabe on the Orange team who scored her first goal of the season with 50 seconds left on the clock to put the final nail in the coffin and keep her team on top of the league with 12 points.
Week 7 brought a whole ton o' fun to the GWLWHL on Friday night! The first game of the evening was between Team Purple and Team Orange. The Orange team had to request a spare player as many of their own skaters were busy Black Friday shopping, but that didn't stop the team from getting their own "great deal" on the ice by winning the match 3-0. They opened up the scoring early on in the first period and managed to shut down many of Team Purple's shooting attempts. Taking note of the Winnipeg Jets and Minnesota Wild's own bench brawl in their game on the same night, GWLWHL conveners Melody Zeller (Orange) and Jennifer Smith (Purple) tried to get both their teams energized by starting something with their own battle along the boards for the puck. It didn't result in a full bench clearing scuffle...this time!
The second game of the night saw Team Yellow take on Team Blue. Both teams took advantage in the first period to analyze and observe the other team's players as this was their first meeting of the GWLWHL season. After a scoreless first period, the Blue team were the first to get on the board, scoring two in the second - one from goal-scoring machine, Chantal "La-la-la-la-la" LaFreniere. Captain Megan on Team Yellow scored early in the third period, but a backhand shot from Team Blue's Sheila Wilson-Kowal that rebounded off the helmet of the Yellow team's goalie and in, helped to solidify Blue's win. These two teams will meet up again in just two weeks for another electrifying match up.
Christmas came early this year as Team Red took on Team Green in the night's last game to determine who would have to leave the cookies out for Santa. Team Red checked their list twice and was set to deny the Green team of any Christmas cheer by scoring with just over a minute into the game. But when Green's spare player, Chantal "La-la-la-la-la" LaFreniere scored with three seconds left in the first period (is there any team she CAN'T score for?!?), the Green Grinches were ready to bring Christmas to a full stop for the Red team. With plenty of scoring chances for both teams in the second and third periods - especially with Green's Ginette Lafreniere setting up her teammates by making spectacular backhand passes all over the ice - in the end it was a tie game, leaving Santa unable to decide who was naughty and who was nice.
This week saw Round 2 between the GWLWHL teams, starting off with Team Red against Team Yellow. When they first met up this season, the score was 3-0 in Red's favour. Team Yellow was hoping to reverse that outcome this time and get their revenge, however the Red team was a dominant force throughout the game. Though Team Yellow was held to just 6 shots on goal in total, they worked hard to only allow the Red team to score one goal in the game, which came halfway through the third period. Next week, the Yellow team will face Team Blue for the first time this season in which should be an exciting game! Team Red will play Team Green in the season's first Christmas-themed game.
The second pairing was a real barnburner of a game between Team Orange and Team Blue, with both teams fighting for top spot in the league. The Orange team opened up the scoring, but it was Blue's Captain Carolyn who evened it up, scoring her third of the year under the "watchful" eye of fans in the stands. Orange continued the scoring in the second period, but after another season hat trick for Team Blue's Becky Chervinski and a goal from Blue's Desiree Ferbers, the score was tied up once again at 5 each. With just under two minutes to go in the game, after Team Orange was up 6-5, the Blue Team pulled their goalie, hoping to at least end the game in a tie. But with Orange's Breanne Awang getting an empty net goal (and her first hat trick of the year) with only a minute and a half left in the game, the "Orange Crushes" pulled off the win 7-5.
The final bout of the night involved Team Green and Team Purple with each team hoping the game wouldn't end in a tie as it did when they first faced each other during Week 1. After skating hard back and forth and end to end, both teams were shooting as many pucks on the net as they could, resulting in a 2-2 tie after two periods. Then, a lively Green team took the league's fourth penalty of the year, opening the game up to a flurry of goals by Team Purple, one of which was scored on the PP by Purple's "she who must not be named" for her first of the year. The game did not end in another tie, with Purple taking home the win 5-2.

Although the weather may be getting colder outside, things were really heating up inside the rink this week in the GWLWHL.
The first game of the night was between Team Purple and Team Yellow. After falling to a strong Green team last week, the Yellow team was looking for a win this week, while Team Purple was just happy to have more than 9 skaters on the ice! The Yellow team was fighting hard, shutting down almost all opportunities for Purple to score, until Purple's Ericka Halldorson managed to squeak one over the goal line. Up by one after the first, Yellow answered back just over midway through the second and the score was now tied. But even with 20 shots on goal, Team Yellow couldn't get any more pucks past Purple goalie Melanie and the game ended in this season's fifth tie.
Game 2 saw Team Orange take on Team Green. While the shots on goal were fairly even, the scoreboard told a different story when it came to goals. With 14 seconds left in the first period, Team Orange scored their third of the night when a bouncing puck went up and over Green's goalie and into the net, putting them up 3-0 after one. After a quick pep talk in between periods, Green was ready to get something going during the second but Orange shut them down, scoring three more goals. After scoring another two in the first half of the third period, Team Orange was now leading 8-0. In what some may call the "TSN turning point" of the game, Team Green's "Sniper 2.0", Chrisanne Beisick, netted her third goal of the season, trying to get her team energized. Green managed to score one more, but Orange pulled off the win 9-2.
Team Blue played Team Red in Game 3 of the night, with the Blue team being the dominant team of the two, scoring 3 goals in the first period alone. Not letting up, Red was able to get on the board when a pass from behind the net landed on Naomi Litman's stick and she made no mistake getting it into the back of the net. With another Red goal in the third, it was not enough to get past Blue, who won the match 5-2 and is now leading the league in points.
Week 6 will see more tough match-ups between GWLWHL teams when Team Yellow looks for revenge against Team Red who beat them 3-0 during Week 1. The Orange team and Blue team will meet up once again this season in what is sure to be a high scoring game. Expect an energetic and thrilling game to end the evening as neither Team Purple nor Team Green want to end up with yet another tie game as they did during Week 1. Hang around after your game or come early to cheer on the teams!

It was an evening of primary versus secondary colours in the GWLWHL as the first game of the night saw Team Red play Team Orange in what was another great, crowd-pleasing match-up between two powerful teams. The Orange team opened up the scoring with Red answering back just two minutes later. Team Orange then waited until the very end of the first period to net their second of the night with only 8 seconds left, lifting them to a 2-1 lead after one. The second period saw the league's second penalty of the season, when the Red Team was given two minutes for hooking, but they did not let Orange get anything going, rallying to shut down all of Orange's chances for a goal on the PP. With just 3 minutes left in the game and down by one goal, a pass across the ice to the Red Team's Joy Levesque, made it through to the back of the net, resulting in yet another GWLWHL tie game. We're now at 4 tie games this season and counting!
The next Friday night showdown was between Team Yellow and Team Green. Although green is "secondary" in the colour scheme of life, the Green Team proved this week that they won't be second to anyone or anything! Reciting their game mantra of "I think I can, I think I can," they started off with a high energy level, taking every opportunity to shoot the puck to the net. With an impressive 26 shots on goal, it was already 4-0 for Team Green after two. Yellow tried to make a comeback with time running out in the third, scoring one goal, but it wasn't enough to stop the surging "Green Machines".
The night wrapped up with Team Blue blasting Team Purple in what was a primary/secondary colour catastrophe of a game - if you were on the Purple team, that is. Team Blue lived up to their "primary" colour roles by not only having a nearly full bench, but also by scoring 3 goals in the first period alone. Purple, down and out with limited players on the ice, showed they could still come together through tough times, even as Trudy Mulder tried to distract players by skating with a "Happy Birthday" helium balloon tied to her helmet for the first half of the game. The shiny display was enough to disorient Team Purple long enough, with Chantal "la-la-la-la-la" LaFreniere scoring Blue's final goal of the night to win 4-0.
Week 3 began with Team Blue looking for their first "W" of the season against Team Green. With plenty of scoring chances in the first period alone, the Blue team seemed happy just to ring the puck off the iron and out instead. After a scoreless first, both teams turned up the intensity even more, and with just over 4 minutes left in the second, the Blue team got ahead 1-0. In the third period, Team Green fought hard to get on the scoreboard. After seeing the Blue team score shortly after hitting a goalpost, they decided to test that theory for themselves and did the same. Unfortunately, that method of scoring only worked for the Blue team and with just seconds left in the game, Team Blue squeaked another puck through a bunch of traffic in front of the net to solidify their win 2-0.
The evening's second game saw Team Red face Team Purple. Team Red didn't waste any time getting things going when Naomi Litman netted one only 10 seconds into the game. The Purple team answered back later on in the first period, tying the game up. Three more goals were scored by Team Purple in an eventful second period, including a nice goal by Purple Captain Sheryl, scoring her first of the season. It was a hard fought, back-and-forth game between the two teams that ended with Team Purple victorious for their first "non-tie" game win of the season, now currently leading the league in points.
The last game of the night ended with a citrus-infused match-up with Team Yellow taking on their juicy rivals, the Orange team. Yellow was hoping for their first win of the year and the game soon became a battle between each team’s player wearing jersey #4 for goal number one. It was Yellow's #4 that squeezed the first goal out of Team Orange but Team Yellow didn't stop there. Yellow Captain Megan was looking for her first goal of the season and she found it in the second period, putting her team up 2-0. Only seconds later, and feeling pressure from the Orange team, Team Yellow brought out their juicer and scored one more. It was another fast-paced, exhilarating game in the GWLWHL, with Team Yellow’s goaltender, Nat, taking home week 3’s first star, not letting any of Orange’s pulp get through the strainer.
Team Purple's first game of the season ended in a tie last week and this week, they came out on the ice swinging, looking to get an early lead to squash any hopes of a Team Orange win. The first goal of the night came courtesy of Team Purple's Morgan McCaughan, who scored in the first period, putting Purple up 1-0 through one. The second period brought a surge of Orange power when Hayleigh Gushuliak scored their first goal right off the face off. But Team Purple didn't let that quick goal get them down. They rallied late in the third period but by then, Team Orange already scored a second goal, putting "the juices" up by one. An exciting back-and-forth game ended in a tie - the second tie for Team Purple so far this year.
After a Game 1 loss last week, Team Yellow were looking to get on the scoreboard early against a feisty Green team. Green drew first blood when Captain Lindsay, parked right on the doorstep, knocked in a juicy one. Then, unexpectedly, it was deja vu when Lindsay scored her second goal the exact same way, putting Green up 2-0. In the third period, Joelle Hutcheson got her Yellow team on the board with a quick goal. Seconds later, Yellow scored again with a shot that just snuck past the goaltender. Not about to let a Yellow resurgence happen, Team Green answered back when Captain Stacey got goal number four of the night. With another goal added to Green's list with only a few minutes left in the game, the Green team solidified their win.
Both Team Blue and Team Red had the same number of goals last week ("lucky" number 3?!) and were both looking to double (or triple?!?!?) that score this week when they matched up for the final game of the night. With only 4 minutes remaining in the first period, Blue team's Becky Chervinski skated right in, all alone, and let 'er rip for the first goal of the night. Then, after a Red team collision near centre ice, Blue stole the puck and skated in for their second of the night. Partway through the game, the season's first penalty was given out against the Blue team for tripping. Blue's defense turned on the power and shut down the Red team's power play opportunity. Back to 5 on 5, Kari Tkach got her Red team their first goal with a wrist shot that flew past bodies in front of the Blue net. Now only down by one goal, Red was hoping for a comeback. With less than half gone in the third period, they got their wish, netting two more goals to be up 3-2. Blue thought they might have to accept a loss but in a freak accident, the Red team knocked the puck into their own net after having it bounce off the head of one of their defenders and in. Chalk up another tie game in the GWLWHL regular season!
Week 3 will see Team Blue take on Team Green, Team Red host Team Purple, and Team Yellow face off with Team Orange.
This season started off with Team Yellow taking on Team Red. While Team Yellow only had 10 players on the ice, Team Red had almost a full bench which proved to be to their advantage. With an impressive 38 shots on goal, the Red team managed to sneak 3 pucks past the goal line to win the game 3-0.
The second game of the evening was a match-up between Team Orange and Team Blue. Team Orange started off the scoring by getting 3 goals in the first period alone, while the Blue team fought back later in the game with Becky Chervinski scoring all three of her team’s goals. Meanwhile on Team Orange, Hayleigh Gushuliak got a hat trick of her own, helping lead her team to a 6-3 win.
The final game of the evening saw Team Purple host Team Green. Green Captain Stacey started off the scoring for her team in the first period, while Team Purple responded in the second with rookie Morgan McCaughan scoring her first GWLWHL goal. What proved to be a fairly even fight ended in the season’s first tie game.
Next week will see Team Orange against Team Purple, Team Green taking on Team Yellow, and Team Red versus Team Blue to round out the evening.
